We set out on a 17km daywalk along the Old Cape Pillar Track to check out the Bare Knoll campsite for independent bushwalkers.
From the trailhead at Fortescue Bay we set off along the track that gently climbs through eucalyptus forest. From Agnes Creek the track ascends to open out into a wide expanse of heathland before reenetring the forest. Around two hours in we reach the Mount Fortescue junction from where walkers can make the return day walk to Cape Pillar where towering dolerite cliffs rise 300m above the ocean and the view of Tasman Island and its lighthouse is spectacular.
We make the steep ascent through the forest and follow the Three Capes Track along Tornado Ridge and back to Fortescue Bay where we arrive in time to watch the sunset.
