I've found and written about a whole bunch of Can I …? tools but it looks like either I fumbled something or Mastodon choked on the huge post. So I’m just letting you know about it.

Check it out. There are quite a few cool tools in there.

Some stats:
• Do not resolve: 2044 (~12%)
• Landing pages: 5671 (~34%)
• Other failures: 4275 (~26%)
• Good sites: 4484 (~27%)

First, my “good site" detection is not exactly precise. There are a lot of landing pages and otherwise unhelpful pages that I was just too lazy to filter out. So we get below 1/4 of live domains with proper sites. Everything else is taken but not used.

Second, in this research I’ve seen a lot of weed. Apparently, “canibis” is a common misspelling, or something. I also saw more cannibals than I expected. Not literal cannibals but the word used in domain names. And many many dogs. Sooooo many dogs.

And third, this is not an exhaustive list. There are much more but I decided they're not interesting for one reason or another. For example, I excluded obviously commercial services. Like the ones actively selling stuff. I also excluded blog-style sites. They might be interesting to some but they don’t look or work like a tool.

And last. I want to highlight this little site: Can I Have That Recipe?. It's a blog-like site. It's design is from 2006 but it's still being updated! I saw a recipe from 2022. Just look how refreshingly to-the-point it is! I hope Beth and Dan are doing well.
