If you have ridden along Marine Parade or Beach Road this week you would have noticed work is underway to remove six separated bike lanes. Protected lanes at the corner of Marine Parade and Acland Street, the corner of Dickens Street and Marine Parade going north and south, and Point Ormond Road and Glenhuntly Roads both north and south are either being removed or will be removed. Protected lanes will be replaced by painted bike lanes.

There was a consultation about whether to retain the lanes (which were part of the pop-up infra trial), but DTP has released neither the results of the consultation, nor any crash data to support their decision.

Bicycle Network is running a survey to fill that data gap.

DoT has reported that they are finalising the treatment for Marine Parade.

The final design will include:

*updated intersection treatments to support people on bikes

*temporary trial infrastructure removed from road network including local side streets

*new road linemarking

*painted bike lane with increased green areas on Marine Parade/Jacka Boulevard

*retaining protected lane on Acland Street, and

*increased signage.

It's not clear why this decision has been made, as they also say the consultation showed general support for the safety treatments. I have written to the DoT asking if there is more data around crashes available.
