Here's a quick look back at Compassion in 2016.
1) We organised the first International Awareness Day to #BanLiveExports.
In the UK, we protested outside Parliament. After years of continued pressure, exports were banned from Britain in 2024!
After months of campaigning, Brittany Ferries heard our calls to end live exports in a face-to-face meeting with @[email protected], @[email protected] and FOUR PAWS.

Earlier this year the South African Government ran a consultation on its draft regulations for live exports by sea.
We submitted a response, alongside 16,697 other respondents, and 95% called for a complete ban on live exports. 👏
All eyes are now on the South African Government to #BanLiveExports.
2,901 cattle left Uruguay on 20 September. Approx half were pregnant, & all were crammed onto the Spiridon II, a ship heading to Turkey.
That moment, & the following events, are nothing short of a tragedy.

Two months of horrendous suffering at sea.
For as long as live exports continue, we will see more tragedies like this. Britain has banned this horrific and outdated trade - it's time for other countries to follow.

The Spiridon II has left Libya & @awf-germany.bsky.social reports that at least some cows have been unloaded. We will update you as we learn more.
We are calling on the World Organisation for Animal Health to ensure the animals get urgent veterinary treatment.

After a gruelling sea journey from Uruguay, over 2,900 cows had been stranded at sea near Türkiye after being refused entry to Bandirma Port due to administrative issues.
Now they are set to endure another month at sea to return to Uruguay.
