"Happy New Year? Not really if you live in LA. I mean, I was in New Zealand until the 10th and tbh all was dandy but just before we were due to fly home the devastating wildfires took hold. Some folks back home thought we were mad to return but of course we had to get back for the pets first and foremost. Our housesitter had everything under control with instructions on what to put in the getaway car in case of an urgent evac.
Thankfully for us that didn't occur (yet, as I'm writing this whilst touching wood) but we did take in a family straight away once we arrived home. Some friends had their evacuation orders and so we opened our door to them and their keepsakes. Then we've been glued to the news and the fire app ever since."
