Death comes in ambush, and also in high heels! #BLCC

At the start of November, I had a bit of a binge on some GA crime; work was a little manic and I just felt that I needed some time to switch off, so classic mysteries were definitely the best option. I read a couple of British Library Crime Classics, which were excellent, and as there are some common themes I thought I would be nice to share my thoughts about them in one post!

“Frankly, the facts are exasperating.” #GACrime #BLCC

If you've ever thought that locked room mysteries must be a bit boring or repetitive, a new anthology from British Library Publishing will go a long way in dispelling those ideas! "As If By Magic", edited by the esteemed Martin Edwards, is a sparkling and varied new collection of 16 impossible crime stories which demonstrates strongly that there are so many ways to tell this kind of tale.

“How could he prove it, even if he wanted to?” #BLCC #cyanideinthesun

I always count myself very blessed when a publisher sends me review copies - it's a thing I never take for granted, and I always really appreciate it. One of the most regular providers of beautiful books are British Library Publishing who recently sent a bumper package of Crime Classics and Women Writers volumes - so lovely of them! They all look and sound amazing, but one particular title leapt out…

“How the blazes does he think he can get away with it again?” #BLCC #CarterDickson

A recent release from the British Library in their Crime Classics range has to count as one of the most complex and convoluted murder mysteries I've ever read! The book in question is "The Ten Teacups" by Carter Dickson (one of John Dickson Carr's fairly obvious aliases!), and I picked it up at the end of the Easter holidays when I felt in need of a little Golden Age Crime.

I continue to play catch-up with the lovely review copies from British Library Publishing, and I have to confess to have been having such fun with the crime classics recently! They've been a wonderfully distracting treat during stressful work times and even whilst I was poorly in February! The fact that I read today's book when I was ill shows just how far…

So who, exactly, is Mr Badman??? #BLCC @BL_Publishing

In recent years, December has been a month when I take part in the "Classic Crime Reprint of the Year" event organised by Cross Examining Crime. This has been great fun in the past, but I have decided to step back from it this year. I've perhaps read less crime classics over recent months, although that's something I'd like to correct during December, and I didn't feel I would bring anything particularly useful to…

“A little too simple.” #ReadIndies #BLCC @BL_Publishing

One of the presses I'm always happy to welcome onto the Ramblings is British Library Pubishing; as is fairly obvious, I love their Crime Classics and Women Writers series, and they're pretty much always enjoyable and diverting . The Crime Classics in particular are my go-to when I need a comfort read; but I was extra excited about the release of the title I want to share with you today!

“…frantic shoppers assailed the gift counters…” @BL_Publishing #BLCC

Let's be honest: it wouldn't be the Christmas season on the Ramblings without a crime classic, would it?? I'm not sure why I should find Golden Age crime such a comforting read; I've thought in the past that it might be because it's reassuring to have a great detective setting the world to rights again, but whatever the reason I love classic crime, and particularly in the darker, colder days leading…

“The world had gone mad about them…” @BL_Publishing #BLCC

It's a little while since I featured a British Library Crime Classic on the Ramblings (though it's not as if there aren't any sitting on the TBR, screaming for attention...) However, after some recent, somewhat heavier reads, I felt in need of contrast - GA crime is always a palate cleanser for me - and a recent title sounded particularly appealing.
