On the occasion of Belgium‘s National Day on 21 July, I once again took the opportunity to visit the Palace of the Nation, the Belgian Federal Parliament. Belgium has (for the time being) a bicameral system: there is the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate. The current Federal Government wants to completely abolish the Senate by 2029. This requires a constitutional amendment that must be approved by two-thirds of the representatives. During the visit, I took a few photos. (1) Bust of Leopold I (1790–1865), the first king of the Belgians, who took the constitutional oath on 21 July 1831. This date marks the origin of Belgium‘s National Day, not the country‘s independence on 4 October 1830. (2) Detail of a brass door handle with lion motif. (3) Bust of Leo Tindemans (1922–2014), Prime Minister of Belgium for two terms (from 25 April 1974 to 20 October 1978). (4) Detail of a tapestry (1935) based on a design by Belgian painter Antoine ‘Anto’ Carte (1886-1954), depicting the triumphant return of King Albert I (1875-1934) at the head of his troops after the First World War, in Brussels on 22 November 1918.
