@JohnSullivan “Unsafe at any speed” — Ralph Nader
In my youth, first aid was geared towards catastrophic injuries as a result of high speed auto crashes like this. The training films included spearing of chests through steering wheels (now collapsable), heads popping off through windshields (seatbelts) and all the crush injuries from unstable roll-overs (better stability & crash protection), engines smashing into driver compartment (engine collapse below passengers). The list goes on and on. Manufacturers were forced to fix these issues.
In Australia we have an ANCAP safety rating. It’s interesting to note there appears to be no rating for this kind of crash scenario with auto-steering.
I remember walking out alive from a 140km/h closing speed frontal collision; as the result of an Oppo driver error on curve. Ribs bruised, neck sore. All car panels destroyed, 1/2 front of the car wiped off. That was in ‘85 with a brand new GM Holden Commodore, no airbags or other features.
Tesla isn’t a car I’d be driving.
