#MangaMonday “At Summer’s End” by Takuya Nishio
Natsukawa is a middle school girl with developing feelings for her classmate, Aihara. Naturally, there are complications. It’s a slow burn tale of first love, but avoids idealization. Natsukawa can be selfish, and a little mean.
The art is singular. Nishio provides a watercolor “cover” for every chapter, and the sparse lines of watercolor sketches carry through to the manga’s art. There’s no variation in the strokes and very little use of hatching. When detail is calle for it’s usually provided by meticulous outlines. Curiously, a lot of interiors have a slight fish-eye perspective.
It’s currently being “simulreleased” on the MangaPlus website/app. Right now you can read it all for free, but they normally only keep six chapters at a time outside the paywall. It’s at chapter 6 as of today, but chapters 1 & 2 were released as one, so I’m not sure how they’re counted.
