The sets for “Appalachian Spring” were made by legendary sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who claimed that Martha Graham took him to the MOMA, pointed at a minimalist sculpture and said that’s what she wanted. I think he delivered

“Appalachian Spring” makes use of Shaker religious themes- especially the song “Simple Gifts”. In fact, Copland’s use of the tune popularized the song outside of Shaker communities

Aaron Copland (November 14, 1900 – December 2, 1990) AKA “The Dean of American Composers”. In 1942 he was asked by modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 – April 1, 1991) to write a new piece of music to pair with her choreography. In 1944, they debuted the ballet “Appalachian Spring” (https://youtu.be/nM5-CsI713g?si=HzGGsUi30oAFLuYZ) that tells the story of a young pioneer couple. This version was filmed in Pittsburgh in 1958.
