Measles outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico now have 370 cases in total. Two unvaccinated people have died from measles-related causes. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is preventable through vaccines, and has been considered eliminated from the U.S. since 2000. Measles cases have been reported in Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington.
Some residents of rural Illinois and Oregon are hoping to ditch their states and either join neighboring ones or create whole new states. Proponents say the big liberal cities of Chicago and Portland, Oregon, have all the political clout and that their politicians stifle rural voices. Interest in redrawing state lines to join some parts of Illinois with neighboring Indiana and connect some of Oregon's borderlands to Idaho have picked up a bit of momentum over time. But the U.S. hasn't seen a major realignment of state boundaries since West Virginia separated from Virginia during the Civil War to remain in the Union.
Conservatives have long talked about cutting government, but Republicans in Congress have shied away from approving deep reductions because of fear of how voters would react. Now, President Donald Trump's administration is trying to find a way around that by doing the cutting itself. The most visible effort is headed by billionaire Elon Musk, who's likely to never run for office. And Trump is ineligible to run again. That may insulate them from political backlash. But the Constitution also requires that members of Congress, who will face voters again, approve whatever cuts are proposed.
