I swear this #Sling #AirTV Anywhere box is so freakin' half baked. Yeah it's cool to have my local OTA channels added to the #SlingTV guide along with being able to record them too... But Sling provides absolutely no way to set up a series recording on an OTA channel, it's on an individual episode basis only. Then to add insult to injury, y'know how I mentioned that local channels aren't available on certain platforms like my LG WebOS TV? Well today I found out you can't even work around the problem through casting to it or a Chromecast - you just get an error that says you aren't allowed to.

As it stands, I can't recommend adding any of the AirTV boxes to your Sling account unless you only use Sling on a phone, tablet, or PC - and even then it's way more limited than it should be.

So I went ahead and hooked up the #Sling #AirTV Anywhere... And oh boy do I have some Thoughts™.

The tuner is really good! It easily pulls in channels that my old TiVo struggled with. And streaming to compatible devices works pretty darn well - it loads fast and the picture quality is pretty darn good.

Except it's not compatible with all of the ways to view Sling TV. It works great streaming OTA channels through the Android app and the web interface, but my primary interface for Sling is the app on my LG WebOS-based TV which can't view the OTA channels. Even on supported platforms, finding the OTA channels in the SlingTV guide is kinda hot garbage because it doesn't order them by channel number or anything, and I haven't yet discovered how to remove OTA channels I don't want... The initial setup process gave me that option but I can't find a way to get back to it. Sling doesn't offer any capability to hide channels in the guide either (which is infuriating when wading through all the "freeview" garbage they've shoved in there too).

So yeah. It's nice to have the OTA channels in my Sling guide... But the experience really has me wishing my TiVo supported Sling so I could use that for OTA instead.

Been messing around with a #Sling #AirTV Anywhere box tonight. It's basically an interesting little OTA DVR box that integrates your OTA channels and recordings into the normal SlingTV guide. They're surprisingly difficult to get ahold of new if you are an existing SlingTV customer - Dish only seems to want to sell you one if you're a new customer. It turns out tho that their home theater installation company (OnTech Smart Services) will sell 'em to you without hassle, which is how I got my hands on mine.

Of course, I wanted to see how upgradeable this thing is so I immediately opened mine up. They're really simple inside, and use a 2.5" SATA HDD for storage, so upgrading to a larger SSD shouldn't be a problem mechanically... But after imaging the disk and examining the contents, it looks like the OS is likely stored on the disk along with recordings. Damn thing has 9 partitions on it, too... But I haven't been able to investigate any further because I can't get any of the partitions to mount. After doing some digging, they appear to be modified or customized XFS partitions - but I can't figure out how to mount them, the XFS driver complains about an invalid superblock magic number. So I've got some digging to do. Maybe I'll put together a writeup as I learn more about how this thing works!

it’s Oona O’Connor! #OonaOConnor! I yelled to no one excitedly. She was a guest on #BW #DennistheMenace. Turned on the #AirTV ie one w #DigitalAntenna and found a wild siting of her. Pondered if maybe #ZazuPitts who was directing by then did this and hired her. #OldHollywood
