I had an entertaining thought about #StarTrek's use of the #ARwall as I was watching this week's #StrangeNewWorlds.

I've started seeing some people comment that the more they know about the AR wall technology (thanks to behind-the-scenes features), the easier it is to spot it in the way the shots are composed, how there are always convenient rocks, railings, or walls to separate the actors/action from the wall, and other subtle contextual clues. And normally when I see people mention this, it seems to be a complaint, or at least a "well, it's still early for this tech, it'll get better over time" slightly backhanded compliment.

But while yes, all of that is true, I'm finding that not only does it not bother me, but I actually kind of feel like, intentionally or not, it's another nice callback to the look and feel of #TOS. In TOS, we had planet after planet that was a stage with strategically placed rocks separating the actors from the cyclorama background, in whatever color or colors it was lit with for that planet. In #SNW, we have planet after planet that is a stage with strategically placed rocks separating the actors from the AR wall background, with whatever fancy 3D-rendered graphics it's displaying for that planet.

It's just one more way that SNW is doing what TOS did in the 1960s, only with 2020s technology. And for me, that's part of its charm. This may be more of a technological coincidence that grew out of the need to find safe ways to produce entertainment during the pandemic rather than any intentional callback to how TOS was filmed, but even unintentional, I find it a fun additional homage to what I grew up watching.

Shooting “Paige Darcy” on an AR wall meant we could film a car chase, but Mandalorian-style. I’d never seen a car chase done in a single shot from the POV of the car as the camera swings in and out of the cabin — so we made one! #filmmaking #BehindTheScenes #TheVolume #ARwall #VFX #PaigeDarcy #ComingSoon
