One thing that drives me a bit batty is that GRUB is not able to see the FreeBSD EFI boot partition.
But allegedly Windowsβ BCD can?!?
Am I going to have to make Windows the primary boot device just to easily access FreeBSD vs jumping through the UEFI boot menu?
First week of the #30DayBSDChallenge means the first challenge.
I have successfully installed FreeBSD 15 on my desktop. 4 500 GB SSDs I saved from the trash in a ZFS1 pool. Canβt believe a full XFCE desktop and a small handful of apps only uses like 6 GB. The fresh install was like 2 GB!
My challenge this week is to customize my desktop and apps. Thinking of being a basic bitch and going with Chicago95. I need KeepassXC, a browser, and a text editor too.

The BSD community here on the Fediverse has been inspiring to me and learning more about Unix has made me feel that computers and software can be exciting and enjoyable to use again. I want to learn more about alternative operating systems, I want to see discussions and fun projects on the Fediverse and instead of just lurking or scrolling endless to find those things, why not just make it myself?
Inspired by the YouTube channel LTTβs latest β30 dayβ switch to Linux challenge, for the month of June, I am doing a 30 day challenge to switch to FreeBSD. I currently dual boot Debian and Windows but I have been βdaily drivingβ Linux for over 10 years now. I want to learn more about how operating systems work, and FreeBSD with its Linux binary compatibility and support for wine means it could possibly become the only OS on my desktop.
