In my #experience, most of us start being fairly good at repressing and suppressing and it takes time, practice, and the realization that we cannot outrun ourselves to begin learning how to process emotions better."

"By banishing feelings from awareness, we merely send them underground"

An adage to engaging with your inner world based on the quote by Gabor Maté.

Do what matters!

Another #blog #post on my #substack.
In it, I look at ways we process #emotions and #experiences.

From the article:
"When it comes to working with emotions, three categorizations can be made:
1] processing: engaging with them skillfully and integrating them
2] suppressing: consciously disengaging from them, e.g., via distractions such as Netflix, social media, drugs etc.
3] repressing: subconsciously disengaging from them

Another post on my #Substack:
"What do you #need right now?:
"What is it you need right now? What’s the big thing in your life that draws you, pulls you relentlessly into a – possibly – unknown #direction?"

What do you need right now?

What is it you need right now? What’s the big thing in your life that draws you, pulls you relentlessly into a – possibly – unknown direction?

Do what matters!

That same #consciousness that can disconnect us from our needs & experience, can also assist us in reconnecting with it. Using some of the techniques mentioned can serve as a steppingstone.

What's a need you might have been neglecting for too long? How can you fulfill it?

It's quite common that most of us learnt patterns over time that negate some of our needs. When I worked as a #ManagementConsultant, most of my needs were willfully not met: sleep, restroom breaks (I once sat 5h in meeting w/o using the restroom despite my bladder BURSTING).
3) Engage with an experience: find a moment of stillness and from this place, turn towards the strongest emotional experience you have right now. Contact it - what does it feel like? Where do you feel it? Then ask it: is there anything you need from me? See what comes up.
2) #HALT: are you Hungry (and/or thirsty), Angry, Lonely, Tired? This can be a wonderful check before acting on a basic need that hasn't been met. Maybe having a glass of water is gonna make your day better?
1) look at #MaslowHierarchy and check which needs are met, which ones aren't: At times, we mistake a higher-level need with a lower-level one (my quest for meaning was partially an absence of a felt sense of safety)

1) checking #MaslowHierarchy
2) Acronym #HALT
3) Engage with an experience

Let's look at each en detail:

My 3YearOld niece has a problem: she doesn't #DrinkWater throughout the day. She gets so immersed in what she's up to - all the time - that even one of the most #BasicNeeds is forgotten! Speaking of the power of absorption! So, she needs to be nudged to #StayHydrated.
What's a need that you keep forgetting?
When I work with people, I often use one of these three angles to check in with their needs:
