it was an April Fools’ joke, but it’s such a fascinating field that many kids are into, so i wonder if i should actually study it. Voynichese major.
¹ the most frequent word, “daiin” (863 times), appears nearly twice as often as the second one, “ol” (537 times)
i’m going to try to decipher the Voynich manuscript. it follows Zipf’s law,¹ so it must be a language. i’ll do it this wednesday.

when friends talk, they have a purpose: to get along.
they try to avoid ending on bad terms.

i feel this is close to what Grice stated in Logic and Conversation (1967)

Cooperative principle - Wikipedia

• Language influences thought — linguistic relativity
• A dog need not be a “dog” — Saussure’s arbitrariness
• Try to get along with friends — Grice’s cooperative principle

• formal/informal — register
• derived form — marked (base form — unmarked)

English quirks
• ask → aks — metathesis
• Common words are short — Zipf’s law of abbreviation
• /a/ is large; /i/ is tiny — sound symbolism
• Time can’t be “long” — conceptual metaphor
