Here's a strange situation:

Their companies, though? None of them want to hire their author.

Does Sony run real PS3 hardware for streaming PS3 games, or use emulation?
The PS3’s custom Cell/B.E. processor is a one‑off thing, no longer in active production, same goes for hardware which goes along with it. Supply chains should be really thin for it.
I think likely they are emulating, in-house emulator or a fork of FOSS emulators like RPCS3. Much easier to keep those data centers maintainable and supported.

I can clearly feel that publishers would line up that libraries are hurting their businesses and real authors. They would pass laws against lending books for money.
Years ago it took load of trainings to get developers to understand what cloud computing is. Now we have cloud kitchens on delivery apps and everyone just gets it!
A time machine by itself wouldn't be as great.
If you just move in time; the Earth would have rotated on its axis, moved further along its orbit around the Sun, the Sun would have moved through the galaxy, the whole galaxy would have shifted in its supercluster, and the universe is expanding too.
What would actually be useful is a space-time machine. It would not only let you jump through time, but also decide where to land.
