We're in the early stages of an AI "gold rush" and there is a lot of money people can spend on prospecting tools without knowing where to look for a vein.

Keep in mind that the richest man in California in the 1850s was Samuel Brannan, who never mined for gold himself. Instead, he made his money outfitting the miners.
