@transdiffusion Instead of the American “cc” symbol, we developed our own “subtitle” brand, with a very VHS-era “S” sign. All TVs were preprogrammed to know to go to page 801. (The UK only showed the words “SUBTITLES 888” instead of this fancy boy)

By 1999 one of the networks didn’t want to pay for the licence anymore (or do the optional standards) and just grabbed the US “CC” logo forever more. Within a decade years everyone else had joined.
