(Photo from a few years ago. I'd hoped to revisit when I was in Bristol last week - but it was all a bit too hot and hectic.)

'Heavy Metal' at Wheal Maid Tailings, Poldice Valley, Cornwall. 1/2

The man made "lagoons" stored waste from nearby mines and still contain high levels of arsenic, copper, zinc etc. They have created a surreal, alien landscape - highly toxic but strangely beautiful with its ever-changing colours ranging from deep blues, metallic greys and vivid oranges. It is known locally as "Cornish Mars".
