Feels like a totally new level of ownership when all the hardware in my laptop is open source, with schematics and drawings provided. Same goes for firmware in all the components. Currently playing around with the trackpad firmware, and I managed to improve the responsiveness!
It’s really cool, the motherboard on the MNT Reform has a socket where you can swap the actual computer part for a new one. All the rest of the laptop gets reused as is, meaning that this comprehensive hardware upgrade ended up being really affordable.
The green board in the first image is the original i.mx8mq module that came with my unit.
Is your laptop upgradeable? Mine is! I got this upgrade in the mail last week.
This A311D module adds WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0, and bumps the CPU performance a lot, going from 4x ARM Cortex-A53 cores on the old module, to 2x A53 and 4x A73! Roughly doubled the performance of my computer, and now I also get to use bluetooth headphones 😎🎶
