Vernissage is an independent, open-source, photography-first platform built for people who care about photos - not ads, algorithms, or faceless corporation. Powered by ActivityPub, it connects with Mastodon, Pixelfed, and the wider Fediverse. Built with passion by the community and sustained by patron support, Vernissage stays free, open, and focused on photographers.

I recently saw a discussion here about hashtags, which inspired me to make a few improvements to #Vernissage. I refined the helper text and added autocomplete suggestions for both hashtags and users as you type. Importantly, hashtags that follow readability and accessibility best practices are now prioritized - making them more likely to be selected by users.

I’ve recently received a few requests to change the layout on the status page with a photo. I had a little time today to take a look at it, and I think you’ll like the final result (see the screenshots). The photo now takes up much more space on the screen - as it should.

And the best part: you can check it out yourselves, because it’s already live on vernissage.photos.

More improvements have been added to #Vernissage for iOS. The server selection screen has been updated, and a new screen has been introduced that allows users to create an account on a selected server directly within the app. This means new users no longer need to open a website to start using the application.

And one more small surprise - below you’ll find a link to the TestFlight build (the number of slots is limited). I’ll appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Work on #Vernissage for iOS is still ongoing. All planned features have already been implemented. What remains are testing, refinements, and polishing to deliver the best possible app for sharing your photography. The latest build introduces a contextual menu on timelines, adapting to single or multiple photos while previewing the beginning of the status text. 😊

Huge thanks to all my Patrons for the feedback and testing Vernissage iOS app. I really hope the main issues have now been resolved.

As usual, most of the challenges were around extracting and transforming files from the Photos/Files apps.

Patrons, the new version is now available for you! I’ve slightly improved the metadata editing screen, so you can now clearly see which photo you’re describing and what its dimensions are. Enjoy using it! And as always, I’m looking forward to your feedback 😊

Patrons - check your inboxes. You’ve got a little surprise! 🎁

As a thank-you for supporting Vernissage, you’re the first to get access to the native iOS app (via TestFlight). It already includes almost all key features - the only thing coming later is push notifications (needs more backend work). I’m aiming to make this app as user-friendly as possible, with a strong focus on great UX. After testing and stabilizing, I’ll release it on the App Store for everyone (still deciding the model).

As the year comes to an end, here’s a look at the roadmap screenshots showing what was done in #Vernissage this year.

Over 100 bugs fixed and features implemented - and that’s only what made it onto the roadmap. Many more improvements happened along the way.

It’s been a very busy year, and I’m really happy with how #Vernissage looks and works today. There’s still a lot ahead, but the platform is slowly becoming mature - and I’m optimistic about what the next year will bring. ✨

#YearInReview

After a few pretty intense days of work, I finally managed to migrate the app to Angular Material M3 🎉

The nice side effect? I was able to delete a surprisingly large amount of code (mostly CSS 😅). The app looks a bit different now - mainly updated buttons, colors, and overall styling - but it feels cleaner and more consistent.

The new version is already live at https://vernissage.photos 🚀

Tactical report from the fly.io frontlines:

- All apps and the database evacuated to a new region (Amsterdam).
- Database promoted to Managed Postgres.
- Performance (and therefore the whole system): tragic.
- Faster machine: $282/month.
- Available funds: none.

If you’ve got any brilliant ideas for sturdier support (a.k.a. funding), please let me know! 🥺
