Currently, the semi-official advice (App Store Engineer, Jan ’23) is a convoluted IAP workaround: A $0 non-consumable ā€œtrial,ā€ plus tracking to convert to a one-time purchase. It’s not just complex—it’s also a drop-off for folks who don’t trust ā€œpayingā€ $0 to try an app.

So I started a thread a couple months ago to see if this is still the path. So far it’s just other devs with the same complaint, but you can follow along in case someone from Apple responds.

Free trial for one-time purchase: … | Apple Developer Forums

Was venting to a friend about how hard it is to sell a paid-upfront app without a free trial…unless you switch to subscription (which makes no sense for a basic calculator).

Turns out he was part of a small effort to form an Apple dev union—and this was one of their core gripes! I had no idea at the time since I wasn’t an indie dev then.

Eight years later, and this is still not a solved problem.

On #Android it’s the opposite: no seconds hand on the icon, but there’s a setting to show seconds in the app.

Still amazes me that the #iOS Clock app icon shows seconds, but the app itself does not.

This annoys me exactly two times a year when I have to manually set a handful of clocks for the (nonsensical) time change.
