Tool-making primate in the (late?) Anthropocene.

I want nothing less than for all humans, in all of our diversity, to live equitably and justly on this beautiful planet.

Food, housing, and healthcare are human rights. No human being is illegal. Due process of law for all.

Header image alt textView from my window on the westbound Amtrak California Zephyr, west of Kremmling, CO. The Colorado River is in the foreground. On its far shore are trees with fall colors at the base of a hill which rises to a blue sky with a few brilliant white clouds.
Bill Frisell celebrating his 75th birthday at Denver's Federal Theater tonight. His playing is so beautiful, like chiming bells. Great bass and drumming from Luke Bergman & Tim Angulo. A wonderful meditation. #LiveMusic
Thomas Dolby at the newly-renovated Federal Theater in Denver, Colorado tonight. Fantastic show. A great songwriter, musician, performer, storyteller, and engineer. 🤩 #LiveMusic

On this day in 1944, my granduncle Dean—my dad's middle-namesake—was killed in action fighting fascism. He was a 20-year-old ball turret gunner on an B-17. He died somewhere between the sky and a patch of land near Millingsdorf Germany.

I know this due to a remarkable document: an 85-page Missing Air Crew Report preserved in the US National Archives, whose motto is "littera scripta manetā€: the written word endures.

I recently discovered my 20+ year-old radio receiver still works, and this has reinvigorated my interest in getting my #hamradio license. Also want to experiment with #SDR because waterfall displays 🤩.

In the past I mostly used this receiver for aviation comms, but I wanted to branch out to some other bands so tried #WWV. I'm about 60 miles south of the antennae sites, but only hear static on all five freqs. Is this because the stock rubber ducky antenna is inadequate for HF?

Mt. Garfield and the Book Cliffs rise steeply north of an orchard (or vineyard?) in Palisade, CO. Photographs through the windows of the Superliner sleeper cars on the #Amtrak #CaliforniaZephyr can look better than you might expect, though always a bit soft. The panes are some kind of tough, hard plastic like Lexan, tinted an amber color which can enhance golden hour shots šŸ˜„. On the westbound train they often get a wash in Denver Union Station for optimal sightseeing through the Rockies.
#Locomotives visible as the westbound #Amtrak #CaliforniaZephyr rounds a curve near Hot Sulphur Springs on a lovely early fall day in the Colorado Rockies. I love these opportunities to see the front or back of the train I'm on. Both locomotives are the venerable GE P42DC. I have not yet been pulled by a new Siemens ALC-42 on my Zephyr trips. #trains

Delighted by the quasi-geometric #tiling of this #bark. Photos app identified this #tree variously as a London plane, American sycamore, or Oriental plane (all genus #Platanus) in pics of its habit.

As a #typography enthusiast, I'm fascinated by hand-lettered exhibit descriptions. People who do this work: I love it! You are so talented! Thank you! How?! I have feelings and questions!

If you're at a #museum and see someone reverently touching the lettering on the wall, it’s probably me, feeling for the edges of the glyphs to convince myself it's analog typography. Though I hope there are other appreciators out there.
