ā€œI’ve never seen anything like this in my more than 20 years in Congress.ā€

—George Santos

It's strange to me that people are so focused on quote toots (which would be nice but I don't have particularly strong feelings about) when, in my opinion, what Mastodon desperately needs is a functional search bar. There is no better way to find out what is going on with a given topic.

Yeah, I know about hashtags, and I really don't think they are a suitable replacement.

Sick of people calling everything in crypto a Ponzi scheme. Some crypto projects are Pump-and-Dump schemes, while others are Pyramid schemes. Others are just middlemen skimming off the top. Others are just standard-issue fraud.

Stop glossing over the diversity in the industry.

It has been passed on to me, that I shall pass on this wish:

>> Happy Fibonacci Day! 1 1 23

and I find this an excellent way to begin.

NYT does a major deep dive on the fake red wave polling this cycle. Very much worth a read. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/31/us/politics/polling-election-2022-red-wave.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

The errant surveys spooked some candidates into spending more money than necessary, and diverted help from others who otherwise had a fighting chance of winning.

Question for the Mastodonerati: I am on two servers. Why can I find people on other servers from server A, but they don't appear in searches from server B? Huh? Why is that?

My dear friend and former colleague at ETS, Preston Foster, has a pithy and pointed answer on the issue of what people say they are fighting when they say they are fighting wokeness

https://www.whattheyshouldsay.org/post/defining-rhetoric

Defining Rhetoric

Defining rhetoric: Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, is the leading opponent of "woke-ness." When asked, in court, to define what "woke" means, the governor’s general counsel, Ryan Newman, said ā€œwokeā€ means ā€œthe belief (that) there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.ā€ This is what they are against. Now, we are clear. Let's not pretend. #whattheyshouldsay

What They Should Say

I've been creeping around looking at a lot of people's accounts (I'm doing a survey) Noticed that people with very few followers have one thing in common: they have not boosted the posts of other people often if at all.

(When I see posts like this encouraging boosting I always think "well that person just wants boosts, whatever") That's not it. On twitter it was important to only boost exceptional content -- boost here to invite more people to join in talking about something. #mastodonhowto

Did you know that Biden signed 65 pieces of legislation into law this week? If you didn’t, it’s worth asking why the media you listen to didn’t tell you that. #politics #media #bidenwins
