I write build tooling these days and still enjoy making developer's lives easier. I spent 21 years at Sun Microsystems, Inc, working on and around Solaris, and then a while at Joyent.

I do miss the old days a bit, but rose-tinted glasses and all that... I now use FreeBSD on my personal systems where I can. I have many hobbies, one of which is keeping my old Series Land Rover running.

Car numerology:

I'd managed to convince myself that no, I don't need to be looking at other sports cars, and decide to get in the Boxster to get petrol. Looked at the odometer, mileage: 85944.

Gah!

I got home and looked at the odometer again, mileage 85951

Even worse! I'm taking this as merely a coincidence, and should in no way influence bloody anything. Right?

Cool. Now, can I have this with actual tyres please and not just thin rubber belts?

Here are some of the #pcgb cars at the Stormont Car show today. I'm also really taken by this 944. #JustLookingNotBuyingHonest

Living in Northern Ireland and just got a shipment of C4. (timf shuffles nervously)

Also today, I discovered you can get cans of Garage Project's Pernicious Weed at The Vineyard in Belfast.

Had a smashing time with the PCGB folks at the Cultra Motorsport Festival 2026.

Here's a Crosslé about to take off up the hill:

Chainsawing from 9am this morning (our neighbours must love me) and then showered, for coffee & croissant.

I managed a passable "Man in the moon" shape on my coffee, so am pleased with that too.

2-stroke havoc has been wrecked. I'm going to leave the chainsawing until another day though. It's a bit warm out, and while a hedge trimmer was manageable, I'd rather not wield a chainsaw in this heat.

Oh and I have a 2024 vintage Garage Project beer to soothe the muscles. It has travelled a long way from Wellington to get here (was actually amazed to see in a Belfast off-licence)

I'm very glad it made the trip.

Today involved tree pruning in the morning (photo below, dog for scale), followed by drive up to Carrickfergus in the Land Rover (missus in the BMW) to start clearing out my late father in law's workshop. After 8 years, my mother-in-law finally decided it was time.

TIL: Wood turning lathes are *heavy*, and dismantling table-saws takes forever.

Tomorrow will involve chainsawing, assuming I can still move by then.
