I write build tooling these days and still enjoy making developer's lives easier. I spent 21 years at Sun Microsystems, Inc, working on and around Solaris, and then a while at Joyent.

I do miss the old days a bit, but rose-tinted glasses and all that... I now use FreeBSD on my personal systems where I can. I have many hobbies, one of which is keeping my old Series Land Rover running.

Wrt. my last boost, and "shipping velocity," I'm assuming these AI morons don't understand what happens when you have too much velocity and not enough control.

Do you want a CVE? Because this is how you get a CVE.

More skiing today. I'm not quite at For Your Eyes Only level, but I'm at least no longer a liability on the slopes (and Roger Moore had 4 years more years of practice when he did this...) I'm on day two.

After a nightmare day of travel yesterday (couldn't land at Salzburg, diverted to Munich, bus got to hotel at 1am) today we did some skiing and saw a Unimog!

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Rea, aged 74.
Beyond his legendary music career, Chris was a true petrolhead who owned and raced several Lotus cars including a Mark VI, Elan 26R, and the ex-Jim Clark Lotus Cortina. A regular at Goodwood Revival and Silverstone Classic, fellow enthusiasts remember him as genuinely down-to-earth.
That he leaves us just days before Christmas makes this loss all the more poignant.
Rest in peace, Chris. 🏁

"So timf, how are your Christmas holidays going?"

Me: "Uh..."

Now just to zfs send/recv my user data across...

ZFS encrypted root on Ubuntu 25.10, installed from a fresh USB key works fine following the instructions at

https://openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/Getting%20Started/Ubuntu/Ubuntu%2022.04%20Root%20on%20ZFS.html

It's a shame they dropped native support from the installer. That was a lot of hoops to jump through.

One thing missing was needing to run

addgroup --system gnome-initial-setup

otherwise gdm3 wasn't coming up. I'm also not sure if swap is working properly, but that doesn't really matter for me.

Ubuntu 22.04 Root on ZFS — OpenZFS documentation

... and I know I shouldn't be configuring new work laptop when I'm on vacation, but here we are.

Modern Ubuntu not including a ZFS root option from the installer is a giant pain.

What the fresh hell is this?! My replacemet work Thinkpad arrived yesterday, and it's got some god forsaken faux-metallic grey finish!

Thinkpads are supposed to be *black*

What on earth are you doing Lenovo?!
