I finally did it! It took just over 6 months, but I completed the Google Cybersecurity Certification. And just in time for Cybersecurity Awareness Month. It was a lot of work, and some of it was tough (I’m looking at you, Python). The material was wide from cybersecurity concepts and frameworks to SQL and Python. It’s a good starting point for those who are interested in field and want to get some good hands-on practice. It was also used as a study tool to prepare for the CompTIA Security+, which will be next on the to-do list.

Ever leave your computer screen open when you walk away? If so, you might want to change that habit.

Your unlocked computer can leave way to would be snoopers to check on your computer or even scroll around to see any personal or proprietary information on your computer. That could also lead way to someone stealing any personal information or even the “snooper” acting as the computer user to perform financial transactions. They could also create or respond to messages with the receiver thinking it’s the real person. Misuse by a “snooper” could put the computer user in a bad spot personally and professionally.

I teamed up with a colleague to create this video for work. It’s good to get a creative outlet every so often while educating the public on ways to stay safe in the digital world. This video contains captions, by the way.

Have ideas for the next video? Please leave them in the comments.

As I study for the Security+, I decided to create a study graphic. This graphic covers the attributes of threat actors (Objective 2.1): Which groups are either internal actors or external, unfunded or funded, and unskilled or skilled. I'm basing this off of the latest study guide (Chapple and Seidl, 2024). Thoughts from the #cybersecurity community?

So it begins. I finally got a book for the updated CompTIA Security+ certification exam. l'll be working on this over the next few months with no
"accelerated courses" this time around. Topics to learn include cryptography as well as a refresher on a few things like general non-technical concepts. This will likely be my last certification that I'll earn for a while. Maybe the CySA+ (cybersecurity analyst) cert in a few years??

*Puts weather hat back on*

A potent storm system is forecast to move through the Southeast U.S. early in the new work week. From that system, the #Tallahassee area will see at least a level 2 (out of 5) risk of severe weather on Tuesday. The main threats are damaging wind gusts and tornadoes.

As of this writing on Jan. 7, 2024, there are some limitations to the threat such as low instability. Instability helps develop and maintain thunderstorms. On the flip side, mid-level lift may help override the inadequate instability while wind shear will help produce supercell thunderstorms.

With the event over 36 hours out, I’m not comfortable giving exact timing of the squall line’s arrival into the Big Bend of Florida just yet. So far, it looks like sometime between the early morning hours of Tuesday through early afternoon.

Stay weather aware on Tuesday - especially since it will be day two of classes at #FSU, #FAMU, and Leon County Schools. Have a way to receive watches or warnings whether it’s a NOAA Weather Radio or a reputable mobile app.

Happy Halloween and happy birthday to my Boooo! May your crafty family costume ideas - among many other qualities - continue into our golden years. Love you!
A little late to the party, but thank goodness that I saved those eclipse glasses from 2017. I got the chance to see the annular eclipse on Saturday. I was also able to grab a shot of the sun on my iPhone 14 Pro using those glasses. The stock camera app is a little finicky and has no adjustment settings. I ended up using the Moment camera app, and it came out better than I thought.

I went into the exam expecting to fail.

I made a social post in late July saying I would be taking an accelerated Network+ course. I was nervous after listening to the first Zoom meeting about how much time it would take and after looking at the course outline. I had one to two weeks to cover one of the five CompTIA Network+ objectives. That’s a lot of material for those who are not familiar with it.

With a full-time work schedule along a house of loving but noisy boys - a four-year-old and an infant - it was proving to be difficult to find the time to sit down and focus and not be sleep deprived. I fell behind. And what I did practice and quiz myself on, I was struggling with some concepts.

Then came prepping for and observing Hurricane Idalia as it got too close to home for comfort. Then the entire household got sick in the middle of September. When I am sick, my brain is like “nope.” In between the insanity that was life, I pressed on as much as I could. Honestly, I was never able to catch up to studying Objective 5, which covers network troubleshooting.

I took two different practice exams from different vendors. I failed both. The night before the exam, I took a practice test, saw the score, and went to bed early depressed.

I took the exam the next morning at a testing center. I saw stunned when I saw the score and “Congratulations!” To pass the exam, you need to get 80% of the questions and exercises correctly. I earned an 82.2%.

Maybe I know more about networking than I thought. Maybe getting a full-nights sleep helped to clear the head a bit. Maybe I just underestimated myself. Regardless, I did it!

I’ll be taking a break for 2-3 months, but the Security+ will come next.

P.S. Thank you to my wife who always believed I would pass it.

I'm sorry, but the "phoenix" looks a lot like a chicken that was set on fire.
