The Mixed Reality headset (AR + VR)

Oh wow, this company is actually working on a standalone VR headset that will run proper Linux out-of-the-box: https://simulavr.com/blog/update-1-simula-one-teaser/

Seems like the focus is on portable productivity (using the HMD instead of multiple monitors). Official input will likely be limited to keyboard, mouse, and hand tracking but I assume a community hack for existing VR controllers will be attempted.

Beyond repair and OS options it would be nice if consumer devices provided full body tracking, 180° field of view, robust hand tracking with per-finger feedback, and proper depth-of-field. A lot of interesting applications are already being made with current VR technology but I don't think we're anywhere near done with hardware advances so the time for pure software exploration seems pretty far off.
I half-agree with the argument that new VR hardware isn't needed however most companies are only releasing Apple/Nintendo -style devices that aren't easy to repair or upgrade and which don't work well with Linux or allow internal OS swapping. The VR equivalent of a Reform laptop might not be around the corner but I do want want hardware that's less disposable and console-like without the Windows and Android focus.

Valve has put out a new video showing a teardown of their new Steam Deck console. The thumbnail literally says "You shouldn't do any of this." The video itself explains the (perfectly valid) reasons why, but also shows how to do it properly if you're gonna do it anyway. They also mention that you can buy replacement parts directly from Valve.

This is honestly a really great stance for a hardware manufacturer to take on the Right to Repair movement. WARN, don't restrict.

See, Apple? Is that so hard?

Gorgeous map work on display there. I especially like Alkaline with the Makkon textures.

Trying a fiber connection for the first time lately. Testing with mobile hardware makes it really obvious which sites are slow not simply because they have a lot of images but because they run tons of javascript nonsense before they display the text you want to read.
