The world needs more climate action, but it's hard to convince people. So we're making it rewarding instead. Flipping the math on climate change. 🌍

Nudge theory was all about taking responsibility – but it allowed big business to look the other way | The-14

Critics argue nudge theory shifts responsibility onto individuals masking corporate power Real change requires systemic policy action not just behavioral nudges

I posted earlier about carbon offsets being the most cost-effective climate action β€” despite their well-documented flaws. The New Climate just published an expanded version with the full analysis, which is a vote of confidence in the numbers.

Why it matters: I'm building TheCoin, which makes offsetting free. This argument is why it's the most important thing I can do for the climate.

In Defense of Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsets are terrible. They are still the most effective tool we have.

The credibility failures are real. So is the $53. The question is whether the second fact should cancel out the first.

We don't ask you to care more. We just make sure caring pays. Real returns, real offsets, nothing changed about how you live

Marginal abatement cost (COβ‚‚ per dollar):

Offsets (random selection): $53/tonne
Heat pump vs gas furnace: $92/tonne
Electric vehicle: $1,000/tonne
Residential solar: infinite*

*Most Canadians live in provinces where grid emissions intensity is already below the lifecycle cost of solar panels.

We should honestly criticize the 84% failure rate. And equally recognize the 16% success rate. So we did the math. Taking the worst-case scenario β€” randomly selecting offsets β€” how do they compare to other climate actions on COβ‚‚ reduced per dollar spent?
The largest recent meta-study (Probst et al) suggests 84% of offsets achieve nothing. I reached out to Dr. Probst directly. That 84% is the average achievement ratio across the sample. The paper can make a very different case than the critics suggest.

Carbon offsets are terrible. They are still the most effective tool we have. If we truly want to tackle the climate crisis, we need to start treating them as such.

Subsidizing portable solar home systems provides a reliable way to reduce CO2 and empowers people where it's needed most.

When there is so much going wrong in the world, it can be free to do something right. Here’s a review of one of my favorite #offsets, paid by #TheCoin's yield capture.

One of my earliest memories is of my Dad marking exams by lantern light (pictured). So when we found an offset subsidizing solar lighting in Kenya & Uganda, it was an easy one to support. (1/2)

Hello #Fediverse! πŸ‘‹

I’m a software developer based in Lundar, Manitoba πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦, building #TheCoin, a climate-fintech project that flips the math on #ClimateAction.

Politics and corporate goodwill struggle to address the climate crisis, personal action is hard to scale. That's why I built TheCoin, a system to reward individuals and fund climate projects through verified #offsets.

Looking forward to meeting the #ClimateTech, #Fintech, and #BuildInPublic communities here! 🌍
