What was once the third largest lake in the world, the Aral Sea is now mostly desert due to water being used for irrigation, even though Soviet scientists knew the lake was doomed in the 1960s. The heaviest land vehicles ever made are bucket wheel excavators. The biggest is used to mine coal in Germany, at a massive scale. Coal is still a significant energy source, even with growth in renewables.
