I have initiated an account with masto.host and will probably be moving my Mastodon presence to my own instance in the next 48 hours or so. Please follow along when I move my account; I enjoy everyone I follow and that follows me in this wonderful Fediverse.

WOW.. @system76 has given us a gift!

An #amd #linux laptop with a 16" 2k screen and CENTERED keyboard!!

This now joins the VERY short list of full size laptops without an evil numpad!

OpenStreetMap.org currently offline. Operations Team are working to restore - 15 December 2024 (Updated)

After leading several major incident service recovery teams, the details of a real-world failure are always more complex than anyone expects. I’d suggest patience until the hosting provider issues a root-cause report, and this can be used to review the overall architecture against availability goals, and yes, costs.

I have to admit, the NY Times has done a great job of completely screwing up a simple game like Wordle. For a few weeks I had to sit through an ad. Now the ad is ever present at the top of the screen and I have to swipe down to a smaller version of the game board. Then, when I want to share my win with my husband, I have to cut and paste the results into a text message, because the share sheet no longer works.

Ads first, humans second. It's the way of the NY Times.

Creativity.

I love the person that writes the Forecast Discussion for the Tucson office of the National Weather Service.  Their creativity is awesome.

#weather is awesome.

Contrary to popular belief, ADS-B is not required for every flying object in the sky. Every airplane is NOT required to be beaming its signal. It’s all dependent on airspace. So, there’s a fair chance that airplane up there isn’t telling FlightAware who it is.
There’s a light in the sky!

After months of wrestling with too many Apple centric applications with decent web interface options, I jumped to cross platform, I own the data goodness again. todo.txt and Obsidian for the win.

And this is just after I wrote about being OK with a Mac app with a web interface. Apparently I lied.

Tell me about your excitement level about the arrival of 2025.

Let’s just say I’m doubling down on my studies of stoicism.

WARNING re increase in "PayPal" phishing attempts

Over the last 48 hours or so, there appears to have been a dramatic increase in fake "PayPal" invoices. While these are fairly obvious relatively, many people may still panic and call the phone numbers (they vary) listed. That is how the phishing attackers gather your information and/or try to get you to let them take over your computer.

While it is possible to send fake invoices through PayPal that seem more genuine, the ones I've seen today aren't going through PayPal at all (they have all been Microsoft Outlook sourced) except to use PayPal URLs for images, and information links.

The best advice is to just delete these. Do not respond, do not call the phone number or numbers listed. Given that most of these currently that I've seen don't even come through PayPal, reporting them to PayPal is probably a waste of time, but that's up to you. -L
