@dpflug @donwatkins Last i looked, my impression is that Friendica is further from feature parity with Facebook than Mastodon is with Twitter. That is, most of my non-techie friends and family would not see it as a replacement for the role that Facebook fills in their lives.

@jeff Yes I just used Twitodon to subscribe to my favorite Tweeple in here and it feels just like home (only better). https://twitodon.com
Twitodon - Find your Twitter friends on Mastodon

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

Thanks for unearthing this, @donwatkins. It's from last year after I and many of my friends were recently enraged by something-or-another that Mark Zuckerberg had done. (Who can keep track these days?) I have been looking for a #FOSS or #IndieWeb alternative to the big socials for years, and this was a summary for my normie friends about what's out there.

I'd really like to see an instance for #learningdesign peeps with a cool handle like @sapience.social or @learning.social.

Coming from academia to corporate #instructionaldesign, academics are well-represented here on Mastodon but outside the ivory tower there are diverse learning professionals in different contexts that I like to hear from too.

I read on @FediTips that being on a smaller #Mastodon server is better. Been here on mastodon.social for years, but just started accounts at some smaller servers. Just started @tedcurran because I follow the #indieweb ethos, but mostly as a consumer/practitioner rather than a tech dev. Also have @tedcurran for #BayArea life. @[email protected] because @Vivaldi rules. Will probably wait to integrate my identities until the mass migration is complete and more diverse #servers reflect my interests.
@jeannie I think the engagement algorithms are a big part of what inflames the Twitter dumpster fire and amplifies the worst behavior. I'd like to think that Mastodon will be better about that since it's not juicing for engagement.
Oh no, it’s another Twitter thought piece – The Ed Techie
