After finishing watching The Office for the umpteenth time, Prime Video suggested me Corner Gas, of which I’ve never heard of before.

I friggin love this show. I keep expecting there to be a laugh track since most of the jokes seem to be set up a bit in a way where you’d normally insert laughter, but it never is there. It’s actually maybe more funnier that way as well.

@ekis @juliank it’s extremely unlikely that Signal would be able to choose not share the data in the request if they had it and still continue operate as it does. That would be such a huge thing that it would’ve already caused a bigger commotion.

Now if you take issue with Signal knowing your number at all, that’s a different discussion and I might be inclined to agree with you that there are cases where that alone could be a risk, but claiming they collect or share metadata requires proof.

@ekis @juliank true you need a phone number to create an account, I’ll give you that much. Though Signal has been subpoenaed for user data multiple times already and every time they’ve responded with “sorry, we don’t have that data, but here’s what we have” and given only account creation time and last connected date. If they had any other data they would have had to share that as well. They share the government requests here: https://signal.org/bigbrother/

@drahardja @[email protected] I 100% agree. The music in the movie is like the best thing there is!

Now I feel a strong urge to rewatch it. Luckily it should be on one of the many streaming services I have access to, as I had it on DVD but it got lost somewhere along the way.

@ekis @juliank the thing that I have issue with though is that you’re making claims that Signal collects this metadata without any actual evidence. I’d be very interested to learn more if you can provide something to back up your claims, since after all Signal has been subpoenaed for user data on multiple occasions yet they haven’t been able to provide any, except account creation time and last connection date

They would never get away with it if they literally do not have any other data stored

@juliank @ekis correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that the whole point of sealed sender: you don’t need to know who’s chatting with who, just where each message is headed. Or that’s at least what I understood from this: https://signal.org/blog/sealed-sender/
Technology preview: Sealed sender for Signal

In addition to the end-to-end encryption that protects every Signal message, the Signal service is designed to minimize the data that is retained about Signal users. By design, it does not store a record of your contacts, social graph, conversation list, location, user avatar, user profile name, ...

@feuer @husku samoin ku Mikolla, nää meän purkit on kans Ikeasta, tosin nää ei oo samalla tavalla ilmatiiviitä ilmeisesti. Mut sopivat hyvin tollaisiin liesituulettimen päällä oleviin maustekaappeihin mitä taitaa suurimmassa osassa asuntoja olla. @ekis wait, what metadata is being collected? AFAIK the signal doesn’t know nor does it need to know which user has sent the message and to whom as it’s all contained in the encrypted message and sent with just a token that’s meaningless to everyone else except the sending party. Only thing they can share per user is when they last contacted the server (which doesn’t tell what the reason of the contact was) and that’s about it. If you have some evidence to the contrary I’m very interested.
