This week’s post is up for Secret Readers, looking at freshly inked pages from Chapter Five, and some thoughts about working on a *much* longer project than I’m used to.

I accidentally drew a boring panel this week! Sorry!
The recovery process involves acceptance, a little arts-and-crafts cut-and-paste, and of course the most interesting part goes by the fastest. Read all about it in the DD4 Production Diary:
This week in the good ol’ PDAP Production Diary,
- more love for Chris Schweizer,
- the audiobooks really improve Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series,
- My New Least Favourite Thing To Draw,
- and an autumn experience better than pumpkin spice.

This week in the PRACTICAL DEFENCE AGAINST PIRACY ("#DD4") production diary:
More drawings, and I ask, "what structures can I include in a comic to guide a reader toward the intended interpretation?" (in terms of pacing and emotional resonance).
One of those pages where you get to the end and groan aloud because you’re glad to put that behind you
(Crowds, perspective, architecture, characters interlocking, etc. wheeee)
(Practical Defence Against Piracy / “DD4”)
If anyone ever needs advice about ISBNs—acquiring, applying, making barcodes, testing barcodes, etc.—please ask. I’ve been working with ISBN data since a stint at Amazon in the mid-90s and running a book-price comparison service, https://isbn.nu, since 1999. I’ve self-published tons of books, too!
Fun fact: EAN codes that start 978 or 979 are used for books. Because EAN codes were country based, the industry invented Bookland for books—international. (ISBNs are regional!)
🏴☠️ Happy International Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day! 🏴☠️

The proofs for How Comics Were Made arrived! The proof was made on an HP Indigo and then bound like the final offset-printed version, so the proof very closely resembles what I’ll see on the offset press.
The 288-page book will be shipping in October to backers and pre-order customers. Copies remain available at https://howcomicsweremade.ink/order
Details of the project are at https://howcomicsweremade.ink/
This week in the PRACTICAL DEFENCE AGAINST PIRACY Production Diary:
- as TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY approaches, I recommend David Graeber's PIRATE ENLIGHTENMENT,
- a secret delightful thing about kids books,
- some snaps from the drawing board,
- and thoughts on drawing foliage!
