I poured root beer in a square glass. Now I just have beer.

It's #LongCovidAwarenessDay so here's my story...

Our entire family contracted Covid in April 2020. The kids were asymptomatic, my partner had a fever for 24 hours, and I spent the next 6 weeks in bed.

I spent the better part of the next year unable to walk more than a few city blocks. My hair started falling out.

Come early 2022, the impact of my long-term symptoms started to catch up. They were repeatedly dismissed as anxiety, stress, or depression. In reality...

In January 2023 I got occasional night sweats, heart palpitations, chest pains and generally did not feel 100%. It got better during that time.

In February 2023 I was able to do light workouts, so i decided to give it a try with running. One of my last runs before infection was about 10 km in 60 minutes.

3 minutes into the (slow) jog i noticed something was off. I got chest pain and dizziness. I had to stop and walked back home. Lay in bed for the rest of the day.

The next day i was able to get up and decided to get groceries. Walking back up the stairs was difficult and a mistake. I lay in bed for the rest of the day and was unable to work for the next three days.

Since then I'm having problems with light physical activities such as cycling, walking stairs, walking uphill, long walks. I get dizzy and a tight chest or chest pain. The only thing that seems to help is lying in bed resting.

It troubles me a lot since I enjoy walks, hiking, running etc. and I really want to get back to playing Basketball. All of that is impossible right now and I hope it gets better soon.

After dodging Covid-19 for 2 years and 9 months I finally caught it in December 2022. Not a pleasant experience, even though I had received the 4th Covid vaccination in October 2022.

Days 1-4
Scratchy throat, fever in the evening. Many other "small" symptoms coming and going: headache, dry cough, fatigue, nausea, body aches, diarrhea, vertigo, lack of appetite, lost 2 kg.

Days 5-11
The cold symptoms mostly disappear, the other symptoms remain. Feeling better daily. Day 10 feels like going back to almost normal. Testing positive with antigen tests until day 11.

Need rest after every single physical activity.

Days 12-15
Nausea, vertigo, dry cough appearing occasionally. Physical activity such as hiking is more tiring than normal.

Days 16-20
Dry cough returns after increased activity when exposed to cold air, e.g. hiking or talking a lot.

---

Suspected source of infection: Going to a semi-busy bar in the evening 3 days prior to first symptoms.
