Anyone want to take a guess at the first name of that second Decker? Here is the link in case you want to see other examples. #geneadons #genealogy

I love how this old marriage record has a squiggle with "seal" handwritten on it instead of an actual stamp.
"Major announcement" is about as exciting as the "Major Award" on A Christmas Story.

It was tricky, but I found the census listing that should work for that block. I scrolled through the whole census book and didn't see enough children listed as "lodgers" to immediately find the right people. Back to google maps and I figured out the approximate street numbers and looked again.

What did if find at that intersection? Not a children's home!

I found someone with the surname of the birth father of the children I am looking for.

An unusual surname.

What does it mean?!

Anatomy of a search:

So as part of this tricky search, I am looking for Black kids in court or children's welfare custody around 1948-1952. I found this random article.

Prob not related to the kids I am looking for, but I decide to look for this home in the 1950 census anyway.

To find the census tract, I looked up the intersection on google maps. Once I had the county name and my bearings, I went to the National Archives to find the census tract map. (cont)

I am working on a search right now that is requiring research into child welfare, adoption and juvenile court policies related to Black children around 1950.

There is so much unsubtle racism in what I am learning (not surprising). There is also resistance by community leadership, especially Black clergy.

To everyone sharing those photos of themselves dressed like fancy historic ladies: No. Your ancestors bathed like twice a year. They looked more like this.
I think we have hit peak candy shape right here.

Well well well, I see that #SiliCornValley doesn't have any mentions yet on that hashtag.

Let me be the first to say that anyone who calls Central Ohio "The Silicon Heartland" is Mike DeWine's toady. That is a stupid name.

SiliCorn Valley FOREVER!
