Algorithmic Listening Party
Friday 30. April 2026
Entropia e.V. Steinstraße 23, 76133 Karlsruhe
People have danced to algorithms throughout history, including the Ancient Greeks. Epiploke is such an algorithm, evident in fragments of Ancient Greek texts, where metrical short-long structure is shifted in patterns. In this workshop run by Lucy and Alex who perform together as the band Epiploke, we will explore different musical patterns by listening to and manipulating simple code examples in the free, web-based Strudel software. This will include polymetrical structures, euclidian rhythms, South Indian konnakol and bharatanatyam rhythms, ancient greek hexameters, and other strange patterns. The aim will be to understand algorithmic music with a focus on listening to patterns rather than understanding them as code.
The workshop is aimed at anyone curious about the stranger side of musical patterns. You do not need any experience in music or coding, and people who feel like 'imposters' are especially welcomed to join. If you are new to live coding you will hopefully leave motivated to learn more. If you have live coded before you will hopefully leave with new understanding of your practice.
Also joining the evening are artists Janani Suresh Ram, Froos and pastagang, and the locals elmo and grainn.
