Today is the 70th anniversary of Turing's death, suicide after being chemically castrated for being gay, at that time a criminal offence, thus depriving the world of one of its greatest mathematicians and computer scientists,.
My connection: my tutor at university was Dick Grimsdale who built the world's first transistorised computer, and was himself a tutee of Turing. I later worked in Turing's old department writing software for the 5th computer in the line of computers Turing worked on.
