Folks remembering #AaronSwartz today - remember that he was moving publicly-funded research out from behind a paywall.

Then remember the only reason the case went forward is because federal prosecutors, specifically Carmen Ortiz and Stephen Heymann, wanted to make an example of him.

“Theft is theft, and it doesn’t matter if you use a crowbar or a computer” were Heymann’s words at the time.

Notice how federal prosecutors aren’t bullying Sam Altman for the wholesale theft of content network-wide, to build a machine that spews bullshit and further destroys our ability to determine the truth?

It’s because he’s doing it for private profit, while Aaron worked for the public good.

Never let yourself be tricked into believing the legal system is a justice system.

A preview of my 2023 Year in Review is now up on Ko-Fi.

It details what I got up to last year, including a burnout meltdown & subsequent recovery.

"I knew that I needed to make extreme changes in my life. I had no idea…I would need to change my entire relationship to work, identity, and purpose."

I can’t say much else, but I can finally announce that I was the lead narrative designer on this. Excited to see it come together:

New Borderlands game, EchoVision Live, is a kind of interactive series

In the “massively interactive live event” from Gearbox and Genvid, announced at SDCC 2023, viewers will collectively decide on a shared outcome

I just saw a talk series at MIT on "the impact of #ChatGPT." Out of 22 speakers, 2 were women. 0 Black people. I can't believe this is still where we are

Four days left to vote in #IntroComp, a great way to get into participating in #InteractiveFiction competitions. These are intros, and the authors are looking for feedback before turning them into full games.

Home of IntroComp, an annual interactive fiction competition where participants develop excerpts of interactive fiction, gain feedback from audience reactions, and hopefully use this feedback to release a final product.

OK I’m just going to say it: I’ve had a surprisingly hard time finding any kind of dark roast in Seattle. I get wanting to steer clear of the burnt flavor of Starbucks, but I’ve tried 6 places now and NONE of them had a dark roast. Recs walking distance to the convention center? It’s my last chance

The thin/critical distinction between:

🥰 someone mentioning a friend bc they’re trying to bring you into their world, invite you into their circle, or connect you to them

vs

😬 someone namedropping people you don’t know/care about—or worse, find deeply problematic—for clout or position-jockeying

Watching the not-pro SF6 tournament at PAX is making me want to get back into SF in earnest. I’ve been dabbling in SF6 but haven’t committed because I keep getting the weird half-speed bug in training mode but I do miss being more serious about the FGC sometimes.
Looking fabulous, watching esports at PAX
