Poland’s parliament has elected centrist party leader Donald Tusk as prime minister after eight years of stormy conservative rule. His ascension has paved the way for a new pro-European Union government to take power. Tusk became prime minister on Monday. That's nearly two months after a national election that was won by a coalition of parties ranging from left-wing to moderate conservative. The parties ran on separate tickets but promised to work together to restore democratic standards and improve ties with allies. The change of power is felt as hugely consequential for the 38 million citizens of the Central European nation. Collective anger in Poland produced a record-high turnout to replace a government many believed was eroding democratic norms.

The Netherlands has a multi-party system just like reformers in the US want, reputable elections, biking infrastructure that people won't shut up about, a long tradition of social democracy, and just had a far-right election victory. The rise of fascism is not some trickery by Trump or the Russians or the US system: it's part of the world-wide failure of neoliberalism, which suppressed the left and then died.

Let's hope the non-Nazi politicians are sensible enough not to go into coalition with the Nazis so the Nazis don't actually get to govern the country.
