I don't see any current political leaders in Westminster with any vision or strength of character to change direction so it's more managed decline leading to more disaffection, possible Scottish independence which ends the union effectively, hence the statement on Ireland.
Whatever happens, it isn't going to be easy, pretty or comfortable for anyone.

@cstross Independence for Scotland and a reunited Ireland would be an excellent step and would see the institution significantly shrunk and more like the Netherlands or Norwegian model before disappearing in a generation or two, all in my opinion.

@cstross Agreed. Royalty is not something I'd be interested in being a part of. It's archaic and should exist nowhere outside of museums, history books and exhibitions. We can, as a society do so much better but I think unpicking the British social/class structure would require a massive psychological switch from many people within society, conditioned by generations of gaslighting.
I'd happily see them abolished (the institutions and roles, I have nothing against the individuals, largely) tomorrow since I believe they are serving as a crutch for society (our betters, think of the tourists, what it means to be British, etc.) and it'll help the UK to mature a little, but I appreciate that puts me in a minority.
