A receding vista of sandstone, medieval arches, holding up the roof of the C14th Westgate, in Warwick. Arches were such a great invention, or were they more of a discovery? Nice as it would be, there is apparently no connection between the word 'arch', and the word 'architecture'.

I was looking for some font rendering code which I recall writing ages ago. It turns out that it was in an Android app which I wrote for recording archery scores (for my own use) https://github.com/sjaturner/candroid

The user interface is comically bad! This is why I'm forbidden from writing UI code in multiple jurisdictions.

Of interest perhaps, it was written entirely in C based on this excellent work https://github.com/cnlohr/rawdrawandroid

Nottingham reaches 1,000 recorded underground caves in major archaeological milestone in England

Nottingham has reached a recorded milestone of 1,000 caves beneath its streets, a number built through years of archaeological work and historical research. The city sits on soft sandstone, a material easy to carve, which allowed generations to create underground spaces across centuries..

A wet day, so I wandered into the Tavistock Heritage Centre. It's in the former police station and incorporates the old courtroom.

It's really good! There's information about mining in the region, the growth of the town, and its previously underappreciated maritime links.

It's free, and I recommend a visit if you find yourself in town #Tavistock #Devon #Dartmoor #miningheritage #museums #history
