Yet another code monkey. I program robots and yell at clouds. He/him.
I think my mastodon client moonlights as a matrix client when I’m not looking.

Also, shout-out to the folks doing sound at paris gare du nord. Piped-in birdsong was pleasantly cheering, and the PA system in the metro station sounded like it had a couple of jazzy saxophone notes instead of the usual bing-bong announcement tones.

Didn’t hang about to check though. Turns out that getting from gare du nord to gare du lyon in 45 minutes is quite doable even with awkward luggage, but you don’t want to hang around.

I think this might also be my first time travelling a reasonable distance on actual high speed rail, and it really does seem magic and slightly implausible (180mph at one point!) though I can’t say that the views between london and lyon were particularly interesting.
The french do seem to love their massive architected concrete structures. I’m not well travelled enough to know if this is particularly a french thing, but it is striking.
Looks like gaming is off the table too. Everything seems to have a frame rate that I can count out loud. Computers are such a pit of frustration and disappointment.

Augh, my ancient dell switch (bought second hand 20 years ago, first piece of gigabit networking gear I owned) has just bitten the dust, too.

The week is not going well.

Seems like the OS has just completely forgotten the existence of the output side of my usb audio interface. I can still record sound through it just fine, I just can't hear it. Apparently the only output I have is an S/PDIF port, even though there are precisely zero of those on my machine.

Audacity lets me switch to the correct output device, and works just fine, but that's of limited general use.

😭

Been three months of using linux as my regular desktop OS at home. Its been great, right up until this week, when the sound has inexplicably just stopped working. No indication of what's happened. I go to the audio page of the settings gui, and hit "test speakers". Settings gui then just straight up freezes with "wireplumber" eating an entire CPU core. I do not have the time or patience to fight with this shit.

I’m feeling sympathetic because there’s a new dog in her family, and the new dog is basically a puppy version of her. I wonder if dogs perceive that as a particular kind of psychic violence.

Imagine living with someone for half your life, and then one day they invite a younger, louder and stupider clone of you to live there too. Not only do you now have to share your home with this inexhaustible shouty bimbo who keeps stealing your stuff and running away, but underneath it all you know she’s exactly how annoying you used to be.

This is what a dog who is dying from insufficient cheese looks like. Usually she goes for the other people at the office because I’m the least generous person here, but maybe the nicest ones are out today.
