Elected in 2017 to a three year term, I represent the town on our three-person council (called a select board in New England).

Castine is forming a broadband committee to look at fiber to the home as a municipal service! If you would like to help you, email town hall.

Help Castine Improve Broadband Access

Thanks to the urging of George Whitridge, the Castine Selectboard has officially approved the formation of a broadband committee which will be tasked with investigating whether and how Castine should approach improving broadband access in our town. Unlike many towns around us, Castine already has two broadband providers, Spectrum and Fairpoint (for those of us on-neck). So why, then, are we looking at spending tax payer money to build a municipal broadband infrastructure?

Anyone else frustrated with the situation at Backshore? A lot of people have been trying to get the swimming pond up and running this season, and due to a number of factors we've been unable.

Some volunteers spent time this morning making a plan for getting the pond at least filled this year, and are also trying to figure out a long term solution.

This afternoon, town employees will be working to dig out the silt and sand that has blocked the drain flap and prohibited the pool from filling.

Town warrant has been printed and we had a small presentation before our regular meeting on Monday to go over it. Overall budget is mostly flat, with a few things moved around. The school had a large carry-over from last year and fewer high school students, so overall, you can expect your mil rate to stay the same and taxes to be comparable to last year, which is always a nice thing. #castine #townmeeting #budgets
I think this might have been the first year in a long time that it didn't rain on Maine Maritime's graduation day. Congrats to all the new mariners, make your school and our town proud! #graduation #mma #maine

First, it's being called a "listing" rather than registration, along with dramatically simpler registration form, removing almost all of the questions about the actual occupants.

Blog post coming later in the week with a full PDF of the document.

Thinking about kicking off some #ParticpatoryBudget info sessions in #CastineME and curious if anyone has experiences with PB in small, rural towns?

Reading a book one of my select board colleagues gave me about Roger Williams, and the extent to which I misunderstood him and what Rhode Island represented in the early American colonies is amazing.

We assume government power derived from the people who are governed is a birth right, when in fact our fore-bearers had to fight to excise the assumption that all power derived from a Christian God. Fascinating stuff.

Popular to say #Maine has a problem with aging demographics. But 1960 called and wants to remind you that Maine has ALWAYS been heavy on the sexagenarians and older: https://www.planning.org/pas/reports/report148.htm
Planning and an Aging Population

How well have planners addressed the questions of providing adequate housing and services for the elderly since this report was issued in 1961?

The #CastineME fire hydrant ISO ratings recently got a nice improvement based on our major infrastructure improvements over the past few years. I'll have a more complete story coming soon, but contact town hall with specific if you'd more info to bring to your home insurer. They will often lower rates when ISO ratings go up!
A reminder to folks in #CastineME that we are looking to collect donations for our town clock located in the Main Street church! We're still a few thousand $ off our goal, and anything left by Town Meeting will wind up on your taxes any how! #taxseason #writeitoff
