40 years ago, 25/26 April 1986, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, contaminating huge swaths of land regionally and across Europe.
I remember it well. I worked at an Institute for Nuclear Physics (working on space particles). We put instruments on the roof to check whether the gvmt told the truth.
I remember taking refuge in doorways when it started raining - we did not want to get touched by ... rain drops. It was terrible.
And don't give me "can't happen here".
Today is my Fediversary!
✨
I cannot tell you enough how much the Fediverse and Mastodon changed my life positively.
From the amazing community,
to a new connected social life free from big tech's authoritarianism, I will forever be grateful for what I found here 💚
If you want to give me a gift for my Fediversary, please send a donation to my incredible instance Infosec Exchange, generously administrated by @jerry
🎁
https://liberapay.com/Infosec.exchange/
On each of our Fediversary,
let's take a moment to appreciate all the people who kindly give their time to manage an instance for free, to do the hard work of moderation to protect us all, to contribute with code, documentation, art, and more. Without them, you and I wouldn't be here.
Thank you everyone for being part of this community
Long live the Fediverse!
Claire Harvey won at the Diva Awards last night for her campaign Not In Out Name (NION) cis women supporting our #trans sisters!

So, it now seems that McKinsey & Cambridge Econometrics analysis of the likely environmental impact of the build-out of AI-related data centres in the UK was off by around ten times; that is, new (independent) projections suggest (and now adopted by the Govt.) that the environmental impact (via carbon emissions) is likely to be TEN times what the consultancies predicted.
(water usage predictions have also been raised)
Funny that...I wonder who else McKinsey work for???
