Amen! https://weblog.rogueamoeba.com/2026/06/26/free-the-icons/

Squircle Jail is the worst design-related thing Apple has ever done to Mac developers, and probably the worst icon-related thing it has ever done, period. Incredibly developer-hostile.

If squircled icons are actually better, then let that design win in the market. That's how we transitioned from the classic Mac OS icon style to the more photorealistic Mac OS X icon style. Developers adopted it because they wanted to, and because users desired it.

Free The Icons

Apple should end their prohibition on shapes in MacOS app icons

We're announcing the beta of Lettera, a native macOS Markdown editor for *you*

yes, you!

WWDC starts today and I am actively avoiding the keynote. No time to watch a 2 hour advertisement, but will catch up with the state of the union and recaps from independent sources. Futile wishes:
* Deprecate SwiftUI
* Fix macOS notifications
* Swift to adopt Kotlin features (or Kotlin itself)
I'm an idiot. Only now thought to check ifixit and see that they have a guide and a better price for the replacement battery than Apple πŸ˜”
Heading to the Edinburgh Apple Store this morning to replace a battery in a MacBook Air. I wish Apple would've made it possible to do this at home.

100% agree, but mainly this: Daniel is a gift to the software development community. He is thoughtful enough to have examined both the pro and con sides of AI objectively when many of his peers were knee-jerk rejecting it without doing their own investigation. Plus, he's a super nice guy in general.

"In the last six years, billings and sales facilitated by the App Store have more than doubled in China, and more than tripled in the U.S. and Europe."

So you mean you weren't materially affected in any way, shape or form by opening up iPhone to third-party app stores and sideloaded apps, and there has been zero malware crises or PR disasters in that time as a result?

Who would have thought. It's almost like you burned all those bridges with developers for /nothing/.
