More on the UAW Academic Workers strike coming to the University of California.
Strikes depend on networks of aid and support that branch beyond picketing workers. Funding to recoup lost wages and combat financial hardship will be central to whether the largest Academic Worker action in US history succeeds.
The union has announced a fund. Donate what you can here: https://givebutter.com/uc-uaw
Y'all, I want to boost something really important that I haven't seen #academic Mastodon, #histodons and etc broach yet.
Beginning November 14, UAW Academic Workers have announced a statewide strike against the University of California.
The #strike may become the largest academic worker strike in US history.
You can show support for grad students, postdocs, and researchers in several ways. To learn how, check out:
Looking forward to "Ordinary Ottomans: Post-World War I Settlements and Experiences of the End of Empire" at the University of Neuchâtel this week!
The sessions aim at telling new social histories of this moment across (post)Ottoman communities. My own paper explores the Syrian textile trades in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands c. 1920-29. #histodons #history
My DIASPORAS grad course reads about memory, received narratives, counterarchival politics this week. We start w/Sarah Gualtieri's Arab Routes, a masterclass on how hegemonic narratives about the Arab American mahjar also involves the subduction of other histories.
An excellent new book in a growing literature on "critical mahjar studies." #his201w
