3:47am: woke up thinking of Eraserhead. you’re welcome.
In 2013/2014 my colleagues and I argued that social media were becoming part of the critical infrastructure of disaster response. At the time, we were primarily thinking about two platforms, Twitter and Facebook. With the Musk takeover and rapid decline of Twitter, we are learning (and of course should have known all along) about the dangers of relying of private infrastructure for critical services. This Atlantic article breaks some of that down. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/02/elon-musk-twitter-blue-natural-disaster-crisis-emergency-response/673209/
Elon Musk's Twitter Is a Disaster for Disaster Planning

The social-media platform’s crisis has become a real-world crisis.

AUCKLAND FLOODS DATA - IMPORTANT.

Where are there emergency shelters, resources, blocked / open roads, etc in Auckland?

There's now an interactive, crowd-sourced #map and #data. Anyone can add to it and use it.

Please spread the word!

We plan to open up 2000 more TestFlight spots Tomorrow, Thursday, January 5th. The time with the most votes will be the time we open up access to them. The times are based on CST (GMT-6). We will post the TestFlight link before the winning time. [ ] 9am (09:00) CST [ ] 2pm (14:00) CST [ ] 9pm (21:00) CST

@salrandolph Hi - I’ve been using MetaText for several weeks, but got on the Ivory (by @TapBots) test app New Year’s night and it is already my favorite app - you can switch between all timelines and your lists with one tap at the top of the screen! - it already has most of the features that you’ve mentioned. They seem to allow more users in every few days, so follow @tapbots and watch for the next batch of invites to drop. Good luck
@Sundae_Gurl I’m harping this turns out to be true; I guess viol see
Happy New Year everyone, Ella and I started our #archery year off right at Saddle Mountain Archers forest targets today.
@ivory Thanks, I just happened to check in on Mastodon in time to get in. Wow is #Ivory going to be great - really enjoying it already even in its incomplete state. I LOVE accessing all timelines/lists from the top dropdown! one click to access Home/Local/Federated plus all Lists! (I have many) Plus the fact that it's so customisable. I've only been experimenting with it for a couple of hours and it's already my favorite mobile Mastodon app. Thanks and Happy New Year.
@pteranodo a few other folks that I know are present here that may be able to offer more info on the subject of disaster assistance orgs on Mastodon are:
@sahnetaeter @densaer @heatherleson @[email protected] @AlishaBeth hope that helps.
@pteranodo I saw one mention of Team Rubicon (via their hashtag) by way of an apparent volunteer who was participating in a disaster exercise. I'm mostly familiar with U.S. relief groups & EM agencies so I'm sure that there are many I won't even be aware of - maybe someone who sees this from the #EmergencyManagement or #EMGtwitter world will have ideas where to look? There are already many emergency managers here looking around & learning how Mastodon operates, so hopefully we'll see more soon.
