Horse

Do you remember when you first learned how to ride a bicycle (horse)?  I know I don’t.  I don’t remember learning at all.    I was too small.  I mean, I have a vivid memory of the actual bike I learned on, but I don’t remember the actually process.  For the record, the bike was a small orange bicycle with a swoop style center bar.

Grow 10 Percent

The problem with habit creation like exercising, eating healthy, or publishing daily is that we are not perfect. We are human. It is easy to see a big goal like I’m going to exercise every day this week. That’s a great goal. Yet, sheer willpower may not be able to achieve the goal. It’s about building slowly. For me, I think I have mentioned, I have this challenge with running.

Celebrate

Today, I celebrate my exercise. You see, last night, I told myself, if I wake up early, I'm going to the pool early. For no reason at all, I woke up every hour from midnight until 7am. I slept terribly. Now, in the not too distant past, I would have woke up and said to myself. I'm tired. I don't feel like exercising.

Seriously, It’s okay.

One thing I try to keep in mind when building something new or growing new habits. It seriously is okay to have fits and starts. That’s normal. Yes, there are some people who start something new and just keep going. I’m not some people. It took me over 10 years to get food journaling to stick as a daily habit. It too me even longer to get daily exercise to stick as a daily habit.

Breathing

A few years ago, I heard an NPR interview about Breathing. The host interviewed, James Nestor, about his book titled Breath. It was the first time I heard someone discuss breathing and science together. Nestor previously wrote a book, DEEP, about free divers, these are divers who don't use external oxygen when diving in the ocean. Both books are worth reading.

Keep Going

I find when establishing a new habit that it is imperative to keep going. Do NOT skip more than one day. So, you may have noticed, I did not publish my swim workout yesterday. Don’t fret, yesterday I swam 3750 yards. I just did not write about the workout. It was really a good swim. I felt good. Weekly, I try to get one longer slower swim in to build endurance and continue to grow conditioning.

Try to Keep Up

My plan today was to do a slow swim workout. Well, plans changed. I shared a lane today with what I think is a professional triathlete. I have not asked him. He’s fast. Probably the fastest guy in the pool whenever I have been there. The only other ones that come close are the college swimmers who show up during there school breaks.

Emulate

When was the last time you copied someone? I know in school, we are taught NOT to copy people. In the USA, we celebrate original and authentic professionals. Yet, when we are learning as babies and children, we copy our caretakers. I was reminded of this fundamental learning trait while reading Austin Kleon's fabulous book, Steal Like An Artist.
